ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Big Island Volunteer Fire Company reports a person has been flown to the hospital after getting bit by a snake in Rockbridge County on July 15.

Firefighters say the call came in around 12:21 p.m., for a snake bite victim at Camp Doom in Rockbridge County, along the James River.

More than four fire departments were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, personnel with the Glasgow Volunteer Fire Department used swift water boats to go on the river.

First responders began searching, and the patient was successfully located in the Glasgow area.

They were transported to an ambulance and then airlifted to UVA for treatment.

Their condition is unknown at this time.

Currently, it is unknown what type of snake bit the patient.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says if you or someone you know gets bit by a snake, you should do the following:

  • Try to see and remember the color and shape of the snake, which can help with the treatment of the snake bite.
  • Keep the bitten person still and calm. This can slow down the spread of venom if the snake is venomous.
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible
  • Dial 911 or call local Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
  • Contact your local Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Apply first aid if you cannot get the person to the hospital right away.
    • Lay or sit the person down with the bite below the level of the heart.
    • Tell them to stay calm and still.
    • Wash the wound with warm soapy water immediately.
    • Cover the bite with a clean, dry dressing.
