Barbie escapes from both a doll world and an airborne toxic event? Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig certainly see the makings of another Don LeLillo novel.

The co-writers of the upcoming Mattel adaptation, which hits theaters July 21, revealed that collaborating on the Netflix film ‘White Noise’ inspired them to write the ‘Barbie’ script. And it’s not just big hair that both films have in common: Baumbach directed White Noise, which starred Gerwig alongside Adam Driver, while Gerwig directed Barbie, from a screenplay she co-wrote with Baumbach.

“I wrote ‘White Noise,’ and then when I had that in a place where I was like, OK, I did a lot of heavy lifting, Greta and I started working on ‘Barbie,'” Baumbach told Entertainment Weekly. “So that all happened in that first year of the pandemic. They’re somehow related in a funny way. The execution is different, but there are aspects of the world of ‘White Noise’ that actually influenced some of how we viewed ‘Barbie’.”

Gerwig agreed, saying: “Everything was written in 2020, they feel very strongly that in a way they were created in the same place. I mean they physically came from the same address. But I think it helped that he worked on it and we worked on ‘Barbie’ together.”

The 2001: A Space Odyssey-like teaser for the upcoming movie starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken in a meta-satire.

Just don’t consider that “Barbie” could have a possible dual role with “White Noise”…or a Stanley Kubrick film, for that matter.

“I won’t put that up,” joked Gerwig. “I’m sure if someone wanted it could be interesting. I don’t know, it might be weird. I can feel them connected, but I don’t know if anyone else will see it.”

Three-time Oscar nominee Gerwig recently revealed she was scared of making a movie about the iconic Barbie dolls.

“I think it has something to do with starting from that point of, ‘Well, anything is possible!’ It felt like a dizzying spell when I started writing it,” Gerwig recalled during an episode of Dua Lipa’s At Your Service podcast (Dua Lipa is rumored to have a cameo in the film). “Like, where do you even begin? What would the story be?

The Little Women director continued, “I think it was this feeling I had that it was going to be a really interesting terror. They usually have the best stuff there. If you’re like, ‘I’m scared of that.’ Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be career ending,’ you’re like, ‘Okay, I probably should do it.’”
