Whānau Ora collective Te Pae Herenga o Tāmaki and Māori business network Whāriki are teaming up to improve the Māori Auckland economy.

The two groups signed a memorandum last week to share resources and networks to promote and fund initiatives.

Whāriki chief executive Trina Tamati says Te Pae Herenga has been running extensive skills training programmes for rangatahi, and her organisation has the contacts to be able to place many of those young people.

She says Maori make up about 8 percent of the population in Tamaki Makaurau, but there are also high levels of youth unemployment.

“We know Maori like to employ Maori, we tend to employ Maori, we look to help our own people and this is an opportunity for Whariki to help with building capacity and capability with our pakihi so they can or are in a position to employ Maori people,” Ms

Tamati says.

While the Maori economy has leaped ahead around the country, in Tamaki Makaurau it has stagnated for the past decade.
