Oscar Nominations 2023: Full List of Nominees Led by 'Everything ...

The Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert–directed movie led with 11 nominations, followed by ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ and ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ with nine apiece.

Announced in a live press conference for the first time since 2020, the Oscar nominations 2023 were the culmination of months of film-festival premieres, Q&As, precursor awards, and general hubbub. They were also, for the awards obsessives who look forward to nominations like they do Christmas morning, a whole lot of fun.

As widely expected, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Banshees of Inisherin, The Fabelmans, and the German war drama All Quiet on the Western Front led the morning, with nominations in best picture and a slew of below-the-line categories. Everything Everywhere All at Once led in total nominations, earning 11, followed by Banshees and All Quiet with nine each. The surprises, however, were everywhere, perhaps most prominently in the best-actress category. Following a fierce last-minute push for her small indie To Leslie, Andrea Riseborough earned her first Oscar nomination, shaking up a best-actress category that also saw Ana de Armas get a nomination for the critically drubbed Blonde. Meanwhile, long-standing contenders like Viola Davis (The Woman King) and Danielle Deadwyler (Till) were left out. In best actor, things were a little steadier, with all five of the contenders from our Oscar predictions making the cut; in a very unusual scenario, all five best-actor nominees are first-time Oscar contenders.

Inside the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in  Beverly Hills, a mix of Academy members, publicists, and awards strategists—many of them just back from Sundance—joined the press for the announcement, warmly applauding as each nominee was announced by hosts Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams. “We aren’t fired yet,” joked Williams during the break between the first and second sets of nominations. It was a room full of passionate awards-season watchers, who were full of energy and excitement (we spotted one attendee wearing the hot dog fingers from Everything Everywhere All at Once) despite the early call time. Loud gasps and cheers could be heard every time a surprise nominee was announced, such as Paul Mescal and Riseborough for lead actor and actress. As the nominations wrapped up, plenty of “congratulations” were heard around the room as those who were closely involved in these campaigns celebrated their newly minted nominees.

Many of these titles and names are front-runners we’ve been talking about since the season kicked off with the Venice and Telluride film festivals back in August and September. Banshees star Colin Farrell won the best-actor prize in Venice, even as Fraser and The Whale earned raves, and The Fabelmans won the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival, a historically strong predictor of Oscar glory. But as with any other Oscar season, there have been twists and turns. Even when the fall festivals began, few expected springtime hit Everything Everywhere All at Once to hang in there and become what many think is a best-picture front-runner. And with mixed reviews for later-season efforts like Babylon and The Son, directors and stars who seemed bound for Oscar success have been taking a back seat while a fascinating mix of blockbusters (Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick) and smaller fare (Tár, Women Talking) gets all the heat.
