As 2024 wraps up and the new year swiftly approaches, many people are looking forward to days off from work. But while some get both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day off, that isn't a reality for all workers.

For federal employees and companies that observe federal holidays, only one of the two days is a scheduled federal holiday, guaranteeing a day off of work.

There are 12 federal holidays on the schedule for 2025, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, including Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day, and only one associated with the new year.

Is New Year's Eve a federal holiday?

New Year's Eve, which falls on Tuesday, Dec. 31, is not a federal holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

That means that normal government agencies and offices will be open, including the U.S. Postal Service, which will have post offices open during regular hours and continue to deliver mail.

Is New Year's Day a federal holiday?

New Year's Day, which falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, is a federally observed holiday, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

That means that normal government agencies and offices will be closed in observance of the holiday, as well as many other non-governmental companies.

The U.S. Postal Service post offices will be closed, and mail will not be delivered. Other services, including some banks and shipping services, like UPS and FedEx, will also be closed.
