Mason Greenwood’s impressive volley ensured Manchester United closed out their Champions League group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw against Young Boys at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old acrobatically turned in Luke Shaw’s cross to hand United the lead, but it was cancelled out just before half-time by a superb finish from Fabian Rieder.

On a night where Ralf Rangnick named a youthful squad that included eight players below the age of 20, the result was much less important to the new United manager as his side already booked their place in the knockout stages.

He made 11 changes to the side that beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, and United started brightly as Anthony Elanga saw an early shot saved.

Moments later, Greenwood gave the hosts the lead and United looked good value for their advantage.

Young Boys, though, were dangerous on the counter-attack throughout the first half and grew into the game. Michel Aebischer forced Dean Henderson into some smart saves, before Rieder had a close-range effort cleared.

Just before half-time, Young Boys drew level. Rieder made space on the edge of the box before deliciously curling a shot into the far top corner, past an out-stretched Henderson.

The second half was a slightly different story. Rangnick continued to ring the changes and gave opportunities to several youth players, including the likes of Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal.

The home side sat deep and defended well as Young Boys looked to snatch a winner to keep their faint European hopes alive.

But ultimately the away side couldn’t break through with Jordan Siebatcheu and Quentin Maceiras missing glorious chances.

United held firm as they finish top of Group F, heading into the knockout stages where the draw takes place on Monday.
