Manchester United face Liverpool in Monday night’s clash between two of the most successful teams in Premier League history.

United and new manager Erik ten Hag go into the match sitting bottom of the Premier League after losing their opening two games of the campaign, while Liverpool are also looking to pick up their first win of the new season following two draws.

Here, The Athletic has compiled everything you need to know ahead of the big game, including team news, quotes, key stats and how to watch.

Team News

United will be hopeful of striker Anthony Martial being fit for the game, after the Frenchman returned to training having been out with a thigh injury. He was one of United’s standout players during pre-season and Ten Hag will be hoping he can continue his form in the Premier League.

Sweden defender Victor Lindelof is still unavailable, while Facundo Pellistri is also out.

United announced earlier this week that they had reached an agreement with Real Madrid for the signing of Casemiro, but delays with his visa mean he is unavailable for the match.

Liverpool will be without Diogo Jota, Thiago, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Joel Matip, who are all still injured.

New arrival Darwin Nunez will miss the game at Old Trafford after being sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. He received a three-match ban for his conduct.

What has been said?

The build-up to the match has been dominated with the news that United supporters are planning a protest against the current ownership regime.

The Glazer family have come under increased criticism for the way they’ve run the club as United currently lie in 20th.

United boss Ten Hag has called for togetherness at the club in what has been a difficult period at Old Trafford.

“I can only say the owners want to win and we want the fans behind the club,” he said.

“I can understand sometimes but I am not that long in the club to see all the backgrounds, we have to fight together and be unified.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that his team should be awarded with the three points if fans stop the game from being played.

He said: “I really hope it will not happen (the match being called off), but if it does happen I think we get the points.

“We have nothing to do with the situation and if the supporters want the game not happening, then we cannot just rearrange the game again and fit it in somewhere in an incredibly busy season.

“I have no idea what could happen and I don’t think about it. People tell us we are fine, we go there and play the game hopefully and go home.

“But in a situation like this always the other team should get the points because they have nothing to do with it and they have prepared for it.”

United’s home game against Liverpool in the 2020-21 season was postponed after fans invaded the pitch, despite the game being played behind closed doors.

Manchester United

  • United have won once in their last 12 Premier League games against Liverpool (drawn six, lost five) and are winless in eight since a 2-1 win in March 2018.
  • United have lost their opening two games in the Premier League this season – the only time they’ve lost their first three league games came in 1930-31,1972-73 and 1986-87.
  • Ten Hag could become just the second manager in the club’s history to lose his first three games for United in all competitions. The last person was John Chapman, which happened in 1921.

Liverpool

  • Liverpool could make it their fourth consecutive win against United for the first time since January 2002 with victory at Old Trafford, and are looking to win three straight away league games against them for the first time in their history.
  • Mohammed Salah has scored nine goals against United and could become the first player in Liverpool history to reach double figures against their opponents.
  • If Liverpool lose or draw, it would be the first time they would go winless in their opening three league matches since the 2012-13 season.

Head-to-head record

This is the first time in the top-flight that the two teams go into the game winless from their previous matches.

In 2021-22, Liverpool held a 9-0 aggregate score over United after beating them 5-0 at Old Trafford and 4-0 at Anfield.

United lead in the head-to-head record between the two teams, with 81 wins to Liverpool’s 70. The other 58 games have finished as draws.

United also beat Liverpool 4-0 during a pre-season match in July.
