The Premier League's top two face off in FA Cup action on Friday in Manchester. Who will come out on top when Pep Guardiola's City face Mikel Arteta's Arsenal?

ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Manchester City and Arsenal square off in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Friday night in a game that could prove to be a phoney war thriller.

The Premier League's top two are yet to face one another this season, with their previous meeting coming on New Year's Day 2022, when Rodri snatched a stoppage-time winner for City at Emirates Stadium.

Since then, Mikel Arteta's vibrant side have emerged as serious contenders for glory, opening up a five-point lead over City while holding a game in hand.

Can the reigning champions make a dent in Arsenal's irresistible momentum in this blockbuster cup tie? Will what happens at the Etihad Stadium influence matters when the teams reconvene in north London two and a half weeks from now? It's going to be fun finding out.

Sporting News is following the match and providing live score updates and commentary.

Man City vs Arsenal live updates, highlights from the FA Cup fourth round

40 mins from kickoff: Over recent weeks, Pep Guardiola has been calling on his City players to match Arsenal in terms of hunger and desire. A glance over the two teams shows Guardiola throwing down this challenge to his players once again. Don't be fooled by the likes of Kyle Walker, Joao Cancelo, Aymeric Laporte and Bernardo Silva lurking on the bench, this is more or less Guardiola's first choice XI at this moment in time, with the obvious exception of Stefan Ortega returning for cup action.

58 mins from kickoff: And this is the Arsenal XI. Mikel Arteta makes six changes from last Sunday's dramatic 3-2 win over Manchester United, including handing a full debut to new signing Leandro Trossard.

1 hr 20 mins from kickoff: Arsenal and City have seven and eight days out of action after this game, at which point they will resume a battle for the Premier League title that has the Gunners in charge to the tune of five points and a game in hand. As such, there's no reason for either Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta to make too many changes, other than those perhaps aimed at trying to outfox an opponent each arguably knows better than any other. Guardiola certainly has previous for the odd maverick move in that regard. The all-important teamsheets are just 20 minutes away.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: It's been over a year since City and Arsenal faced one another. On New Year's Day at Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta's side put in a sparkling display and led through a Bukayo Saka goal at the break. The hosts then lost their discipline and Gabriel was sent off (following a clash with future teammate Gabriel Jesus, no less) after Riyad Mahrez equalised from the penalty spot. City, in truth, still weren't great with the man advantage but Rodri burgled a stoppage-time winner. He celebrated in front of the Arsenal fans, an angry punter threw a toilet roll at him, City went on to win the league and Arsenal failed to make the top four. It's safe to say a lot has changed since then.
