Brothers convicted on dozens of charges related to Mama Hooch bar
Two men have been found guilty on dozens of charges including rape, sexual violation, indecent assault and drink-spiking related to Christchurch's Mama Hooch bar. The names of the brothers can now be revealed after a suppression order was lifted.
The convictions come after a lengthy trial and investigation into the sexual assaults that occurred at Mama Hooch. The bar has since closed down.
The importance of holding perpetrators accountable
The convictions of these two men send a strong message that sexual assault and violence will not be tolerated. It is important for survivors to see that justice can be served and perpetrators will be held accountable for their actions.
We must continue to work towards creating a society where sexual assault and violence are not normalized or excused. This includes holding individuals and institutions accountable for their actions or lack thereof.
If you or someone you know has experienced sexual violence, there is help available. Contact your local sexual assault support service or call a helpline for support.
