How Barcelona went top of La Liga with 1-0 win vs Mallorca
Robert Lewandowski scored his ninth goal of the season as Barcelona held on to claim a 1-0 victory away at RCD Mallorca and go top of the table.
The Polish talisman’s first-half strike was enough to snatch the spoils, as he became the fastest player to score nine La Liga goals in the 21st century.
In a game where Barcelona enjoyed large periods of possession, it was the home side that registered the better chances early on. Kang-In Lee saw a powerful effort deflected behind, before Inigo de Galaretta smashed over the bar from the resulting corner.
It was Barcelona who took the lead after 20 minutes though, when Lewandowski received a pass from Ansu Fati, cut onto his right foot on the edge of the area and fired a low shot into the far corner.
Mallorca almost drew level ten minutes before half time, when Jaume Costa was found in the box and he sent a well-struck volley goal-bound, but Marc-Andre ter Stegen pulled off a brilliant save to keep his side in front.
The second-half brought more of the same as Barcelona continued to put pressure on Mallorca, who tried to get forward on the break. Franck Kessie fired wide before a well-worked passing routine from Barcelona was cleared inside the Mallorca six-yard box.
As the game headed towards injury-time, Mallorca almost restored parity when Lee controlled a cross from Daniel Rodriguez on his chest, before dribbling into the box and firing agonisingly wide of the far post.
Barcelona held on to make it five league wins in a row and continue their fine start to the season.
