Teenage sensation Luke Littler has his sights set on the World Darts Championship title after storming into the semifinals.
The 16-year-old – who was ranked 164th in the world a fortnight ago – thrashed Northern Ireland’s Brendan Dolan in the quarterfinals at London’s Alexandra Palace on Monday (Tuesday NZ time) to back up his earlier 4-1 victory over five-time former world champion Raymond van Barneveld.
Littler – nicknamed Nuke – was almost lost for words after beating Dolan to advance to the final four.
“Wow. Erm. I’m in the semifinal on me debut!,’’ he told Sky Sports.
"Now I am dreaming.. "I'm two games away. I'm definitely thinking about lifting the title."
"If I keep it up I've got a good chance."
Littler, from Warrington in Lancashire, scored five 180s and averaged 102, the third time he has averaged over the 100 mark at his world darts championships debut.
According to English news reports, he has already earned £100,000 ($NZ200,000) in prize money.
He will now meet fellow Englishman Rob Cross in the semifinals on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ time).
Cross, 33, won the world title on debut in 2018.
He staged a big comeback to beat Chris Dobey 5-4 after trailing 4-0.
Littler, who threw his first dart as a toddler, is mindful of the challenge posed by Cross, who he said was “unbelievable on debut as well”.
He had an early timeslot against Dolan and is looking forward to playing Cross on the night card.
“I didn’t like waking up at 9am this morning, so it’ll be good to chill and come back tomorrow evening.’’
The Guardian newspaper reported that Littler would make the top 30 in the world rankings if he makes the final and will crack the top 10 if he wins the title.
The world youth champion’s remarkable run to the semifinals is likely to attract even more attention.
Littler, a Manchester United supporter, received a recorded good luck message before the van Barneveld match from United legend and Sky Sports football pundit Gary Neville and current Red Devils defender Jonny Evans, and has previously stated his ambition to get the great David Beckham to notice him.
England footballers Declan Rice and Aaron Ramsdale had already asked to have their photos taken with Littler, who was staying at the same London hotel Arsenal use for their home matches.
There will be another all-England semifinal after ‘Cool Hand’ Luke Humphries – ranked fourth in the world – beat compatriot Dave Chisnall (11th), 5-1.
Humphries, 22, will meet Scott Williams – ranked 52nd on the PDC Order of Merit – who caused a major boilover by beating three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen 5-3 in the quarterfinal.
The Dutch master missed 27 darts at double and Williams, 33, held his nerve.
”Words can’t describe it,’’ Williams said on the PDC World Darts website. “Michael is the best player of our generation, so to have beaten him on this stage is just crazy.’’
