Lily Gladstone makes history with her Golden Globes win

The Golden Globes saw plenty of newsworthy moments this year, from the reunion of the Suits cast, to Succession's slew of awards. But perhaps nothing was so well-received as Lily Gladstone's rousing speech, following her Best Actress win for Killers of the Flower Moon.

The 37-year-old actress, who starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in Martin Scorsese’s film about the early 1900s Osage Nation murders, became the first star of Blackfeet and Nimiipuu heritage to win a Golden Globe last night.

Taking to the stage in an elegant white column dress and black cape to accept her award, Gladstone started her speech by speaking in Blackfeet. She then said, in English: “I love everyone in this room right now, thank you. I don’t have words. I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, a beautiful community, a nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, to keep doing this.”

The actor also thanked her mother, telling the crowd: “I’m here with my mum who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom so I had a Blackfeet language growing up.”

Gladstone’s win was a historic moment in awards history

Gladstone acknowledged her “historic” win, and noted that she was “grateful” to be able to speak in Blackfeet on stage as she referenced the early days of Hollywood, when sound mixers would run Native actors’ lines, delivered in English, backwards “to accomplish Native languages on camera”.

“This is a historic win. It doesn’t belong to just me; I’m holding it with all my beautiful sisters, the film, my mother – I’m just standing on all of your shoulders,” Gladstone said, also praising Scorsese, DiCaprio and De Niro “for being such allies”.

The evening was full of great moments, including Timothée Chalamet and Kylie Jenner making their relationship Hollywood official, and several excellent beauty looks – with the bob dominating as the haircut of the night.
