Juventus vs. Roma result: Abraham grabs equaliser for Roma after early Vlahovic stunner

Juventus vs Roma result Abraham grabs equaliser for Roma after early Vlahovic stunner
Tammy Abraham found a second half equaliser for Roma after Juventus failed to build on their early opener from Dusan Vlahovic's freekick.

Tammy Abraham scored a second half equaliser for Roma as Jose Mourinho's Roma recovered from conceding after just two minutes to claim a 1-1 draw away to Juventus.

Dusan Vlahovic opened the scoring just one minute and 16 seconds into the Serie A match at the Allianz Stadium, finding the back of the net with a stunning freekick that struck the underside of the bar.

Juventus looked to have scored a second goal through Manuel Locatelli only for VAR to spot a handball by Vlahovic in the build up. The Old Lady had further opportunities to extend their lead before the break.

Mourinho changed Roma's system for the start of the second half and shifted his team into a back four, and the tweaks worked as the visitors to Turn found more possession and control of the ball.

The equaliser came after 69 minutes when Abraham reacted quickest to a Paulo Dybala header across goal from a corner kick - this was the first goal conceded by Juventus in Serie A this season.

Vlahovic provides some answers

For all that Vlahovic's ability as a goalscorer cannot be doubted, the Serbian has been the subject of much discussion in Italian football of late due to his role for Juventus. Some have pointed out that Vlahovic could do more to involve himself in Juve's possession play, but his performance in this match provided some answers to the questions recently asked of him.

Vlahovic only had 22 touches of the ball in 90 minutes of play, but the 22-year-old still offers so much in terms of cutting edge. It's up to Juventus to harness Vlahovic. They must get him into scoring positions rather than ask him deep to pick up the ball. Vlahovic is the figurehead Juve needed after Cristiano Ronaldo and he is delivering his end of the bargain.

Dybala not up to speed

This match saw Dybala return to Turin to face his former club, but the Argentine failed to produce anything close to his best football. The 28-year-old contributed the assist for Abraham's second half equaliser, underlining his ability to contribute even when he is below par, but Moutinho must find a system that gets more out of Dybala who was isolated for the majority of this encounter.

Fatigue was also a factor for Dybala in the second half. It's clear the 28-year-old is lagging behind his teammates in terms of fitness due to his late arrival at the Stadio Olimpico - Dybala didn't have a full pre-season after being released by Juventus at the end of last season. Roma have still to see the best of their big summer signing. There is much more to come.

Mourinho's tactical tweaks

The first half was a difficult watch for Mourinho as Juventus dominated large periods of the match. Roma struggled to make any sort of impression on the contest and it wasn't until half time when Mourinho made changes, both in terms of the personnel and the system, that the Giallorossi started to settle.

Mourinho shifted Roma into a back four having started in a back three. This allowed Roma to get their foot on the ball and also closed down the space Juventus had exploited in behind the wing backs in the opening 45 minutes. Mourinho's Roma team are still a work-in-progress, but the Portuguese coach proved he's still one of the best tactical minds with the decisions he made here.

Juventus vs. Roma final result   1H 2H Final Juventus 1 1 1 Roma 0 1 1

Goals:

JUV - Dusan Vlahovic - 2nd min.

ROM - Tammy Abraham - 69 mins

90+4 mins: FULL TIME: Juventus 1 (Vlahovic 2') Roma 1 (Abraham 69') - Both teams have to settle for a draw. Juventus will feel they had the chances to score more than once in the first half. Mourinho, however, will be pleased with how his team responded to going behind so early on.

90+2 mins: Late change for Roma - Pellegrini OFF, Bove OFF. Mourinho is winding down the clock. He'll take a point from this.

90 mins: There will be four minutes of stoppage time played at the end of the match. Is there time for a winner?

89 mins: De Sciglio shoots over! The ball fell to the Juventus defender 25 yards out from goal, he couldn't resist and he slices his wild shot way over the target! Juventus have lacked composure in the final third today. Time is running out for them.

87 mins: Two more changes - Locatelli and Vlahovic OFF, Rovella and Kean ON. One last roll of the dice from Juventus. You get the feeling Roma would settle for a point at this stage.

86 mins: Scramble in the box! A Roma corner kick causes mayhem in the Juventus penalty area. It bounced in there, there might have been a handball, but the clearance is made before the ball could cross the line!

85 mins: All of a sudden, Juventus look the fresher of the two teams, although El Shaarawy had an opportunity to pick out Abraham in the middle with a pass after a quick break. He couldn't make the most of the chance, though.

82 mins: Abraham has been quiet on the whole, but the Englishman scored the goal that mattered for Roma to equalise. That's what Mourinho needs Abraham for. Dybala looked a bit tired and that probably factored into Mourinho's decision to take him off.

Tammy Abraham has now scored away at Milan, Atalanta (2) and Juventus since signing for Roma at the start of last season.

80 mins: Double change: Cuadrado and Miretti OFF, McKennie and Milik ON. Allegri makes two changes with Milik coming on for his Serie A debut. Can he make the difference for Juventus in these final 10 minutes?

79 mins: Substitution: Dybala OFF, Kumbulla ON. Mourinho senses the chance to claim all three points here and this change is designed to give Roma legs in the final phase of this match.

77 mins: BOOKING - Kostic. Another yellow card is flashed, this time to Kostic. Not sure what that was for. Dissent?

76 mins: Juventus are now the one struggling to impose themselves on this match and the home fans are voicing their disgruntlement! They feel Juve should have been two or three goals up at half time and they are now paying for that wastefulness.

73 mins: Vlahovic goes down under the clumsy challenge by Ibanez. The Roma defender slipped and Vlahovic went over the top of him. Nothing has been awarded.

71 mins: The changes made by Mourinho in this second half, both in terms of the personnel and the system, have worked and Roma are well and truly in this match. You can sense the tension around the Allianz Stadium now!

69 mins: GOAL! Juventus 1 Roma 1 (69' Abraham) - Roma are level! A corner kick was swung to the back post, Dybala headed it back across goal and Abraham was on hand to convert from close range! That's the first goal Juve have conceded in Serie A this season!

67 mins: Roma's best chance of the whole match! El Shaarawy played a lovely little ball round the corner for Abraham, but the English striker couldn't get any power in his shot and the save is made. Abraham might have done better with that opportunity!

65 mins: There has been a lot of discussion about the Juventus midfield unit of late, particularly with Pogba and McKennie out injured at the moment, but the home team have played well in the centre of the pitch here. Miretti has made a big difference!

62 mins: Substitution: Karsdorp OFF, Celik ON. Mourinho makes his third change of the match and Celik is on to play on the right side of the Roma defence.

61 mins: Bremer rattles the woodwork with a brilliant strike inside the area, but the whistle had already blown for a freekick. It wouldn't have counted, but the fans inside the Allianz Stadium didn't know that!

58 mins: Substitution - Rabio OFF, Zakaria ON. Allegri makes his first change of the match as Rabiot struggles with an injury of some sort.

53 mins: The away team need to do a better job of utilising Dybala. The Argentine has had a quiet game against his former club so far. Roma need to find some pace in their side. It's all a bit predictable from Mourinho's team.

50 mins: Roma are certainly seeing more of the ball in the early stages of this second half, but they aren't doing a great deal with it. Juventus, on the other hand, are making good use of space in quick transition.

48 mins: It looks like Roma might have shifted into a back four in this second half. Will that give them a better platform to control the match in the way they failed to in the opening 45 minutes? Roma need to be much better.

46 mins: The second half is under way! Roma have made two changes at the break with Zalewski on in the place of Spinazzola and El Shaarawy is on for Mancini.

45 mins: HALF TIME: Juventus 1 (Vlahovic 2') Roma 0 - Vlahovic's early freekick is the difference between the two teams at the break, but Juventus have been the dominant team on the balance of play. Mourinho is surely going to make some changes!

43 mins: The officials were checking for a potential penalty kick there, but nothing was given. Roma need the half time break here. They haven't been able to get going at all in this first half. Miretti has played very well for the hosts!

41 mins: BOOKING - Cristante. The Roma midfielder becomes the latest player to be flashed a yellow card by the referee.

39 mins: This time it's over! Vlahovic stands over a freekick in a similar position to the one from which he scored just one minute into the match. This time, though, the Juventus number nine sends his strike over the bar.

34 mins: Cuadrado strikes it! Juventus win a contentious freekick on the edge of the box, Cuadrado takes it up despite the dummy run from Vlahovic, but Patricio was right behind it and was able to make the solid save low down. He holds on to the ball.

30 mins: Roma were given a reprieve due to that disallowed second goal, but it's still Juventus who are dictating things. Roma haven't been able to impose their own goal in the opening 30 minutes.

26 mins: DISALLOWED! After a long delay, the referee went over to the monitor at the side of the pitch to look at a potential handball by Vlahovic in the build-up. It did brush his arm and the goal is disallowed! It's only 1-0 to the home team!

CONTROVERSY ????

25 mins: GOAL! Juventus 2 (25' Locatelli) Roma 0 - It's a second goal for Juventus and it's Locatelli who has found the back of the net! Dybala gives the ball away, the pass is made by Cuadrado into Locatelli who bends the finish around Smalling and past Patricio!

21 mins: Vlahovic hasn't been involved in the match much since scoring the goal, but that remains the difference between the two teams at this stage.

19 mins: Cristante gave the ball away in his own half, but Roma did a good job of getting back to make sure that Juventus couldn't make the most of the opportunity.

16 mins: Cuadrado is denied! Space opened up for Juventus in quick transition, the ball was played out to the right where Cuadrado had time to set himself for the shot, but the Colombian's powerful drive is saved by Patricio!

13 mins: Flicked over! Roma have woken up in the last few minutes. Pellegrini plays a corner kick to the near post, Cristante gets in front of his man, but the Roma player could only glance his header over the top of the Juventus crossbar.

11 mins: Sandrooooo... wide! The ball found Sandro 20 yards out from goal, the Juventus full back wound up the shot, but he dragged it wide of the target. That would have given Patricio a problem had it been on target!

10 mins: There's some sort of flare up between Smalling and Vlahovic inside the penalty area. The referee talks to both players and calms down the situation. That's something to keep an eye on, though.

6 mins: BOOKING - Locatelli. The first yellow card of the match is shown to Locatelli for pulling back Dybala.

4 mins: This has been a high-intensity start by Juventus. They have the early lead and they are well on top! Roma are having to weather the storm for the moment.

2 mins: GOAL! Juventus 1 (2' Vlahovic) Roma 0 - What a start to the match and what an opener by Vlahovic! Juventus won an early freekick 20 yards out from goal and Vlahovic finds the back of the net via the underside of the bar with a stunning left-footed strike!

1 min: The match is under way at the Allianz Stadium! Juventus are in their familiar black and white kits with Roma in their usual red.

5 mins to KO: The two teams have walked out on to the pitch in Turin. The last meeting between these two teams was a classic - Juventus 4-3 at the Stadio Olimpico. Will we get another match like that one today?

10 mins to KO: Not long until kick off at the Allianz Stadium. Both teams have been guilty of being wasteful in front of goal in their Serie A performances this season. Can either Juventus or Roma find their groove in this one? There will be a lot of talent on the pitch!

20 mins: to KO: Allegri has rebuild sections of his squad over the summer. Pogba is unavailable for this match through injury with di Maria also missing for the home team. Bremer has been handed a start, though. He has been signed to be Juve's next great centre back.

Dybala starts against his former club. That is a Roma frontline with a lot of potency. Can they make the difference against Juventus?

Juventus vs. Roma lineups

Allegri is still battling against a growing injury list in Turin with summer signing Paul Pogba sidelined with a long-term issue. Angel Di Maria isn't fit enough for this weekend and Leonardo Bonucci also missing, but Wojciech Szczesny is back.

Mattia De Sciglio returns to the starting lineup, but there is no sign of new signing Arkadiusz Milik despite Allegri suggesting he would throw him straight into the first XI.

Juventus  lineup (4-3-3): Szczesny, De Sciglio, Danilo, Bremer, Sandro, Locatelli, Miretti, Rabiot, Cuadrado, Vlahovic, Kostic.

Mourinho has fewer injuries to contend with this weekend but Georginio Wijnaldum and Nicolo Zaniolo are both out of action for the visitors.

However, the experienced head coach has also reshuffled his options, with Nemanja Matic and Nicola Zalewski coming back into the fold. Paulo Dybala starts against his old club.

Roma lineup (3-4-3): Patricio, Karsdorp, Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez, Cristante, Matic, Spinazzola, Pellegrini, Dybala, Abraham.
