The racing world is grieving the tragic loss of New Zealand jockey Johnathan Parkes, who passed away overnight at the age of 35.

Parkes was a celebrated rider in New Zealand, amassing more than 1,000 career wins, including 62 black-type races and 12 Group One victories. His exceptional talent and dedication made him one of the standout jockeys in the region.

Among his memorable achievements was partnering with I Wish I Win, currently a favourite for The Everest. Parkes guided the star galloper to victory on debut at Awapuni in March 2021, marking the beginning of the horse’s rise to prominence.

Parkes’ last race-day appearance was at Hastings on September 7, and his untimely passing has left a deep void in the racing community.
