The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world with a decorated history. The final at Wembley culminates the league season and it’s one of the most treasured trophies in the game. The competition began in 1871 and an incredible 732 teams entered with dreams of reaching the first round proper and earning a glamour tie. The record for the most FA Cup titles belongs to Arsenal, with the North London side lifting the trophy on 14 occasions. Manchester United rank second with 13 titles, with three clubs - Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea - winning the FA Cup eight times. Some iconic managers have guided their side to glory in the famous competitions but which managers have won the FA Cup the most?

The managers with the most FA Cup titles

Arsène Wenger has won the FA Cup more than any other manager, with the legendary French boss responsible for seven of Arsenal’s 14 triumphs. Wenger clinched his first FA Cup win in 1998 with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United as they claimed the double after winning the Premier League too. Wenger became the most successful manager in FA Cup history in 2017 when he sealed his seventh triumph with a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley.

George Ramsay ranks second for most FA Cup titles with six for Aston Villa. Ramsey oversaw the most successful period in Villa’s history and remarkably there was 33 years between his first triumph in 1887 and his final success in 1920. Sir Alex Ferguson is the third most successful FA Cup manager in history after he led Manchester United to the trophy on five occasions. The 1990 FA Cup is widely recognised as saving Ferguson’s job at United, while the 1999 trophy helped complete the famous treble. John Nicholson lifted the trophy on four occasions with Sheffield United between 1899 and 1925. Blackburn Rovers’ James Fielding, Tottenham’s Bill Nicholson and Bolton’s Charles Foweraker all clinched the trophy three times. A host of household names are amongst 16 managers to lift the trophy on two occasions, including Pep Guardiola, Sir Matt Busby, Bill Shankly and Sir Kenny Dalglish.
