Key Highlights
  • Kolkata Knight Riders were in cruise control of the run-chase against Delhi Capitals for the most part of Qualifier 2
  • From needing 13 runs off the last 4 overs, KKR went to requiring 6 runs from the last 2 balls
  • It was Rahul Tripathi who hit a six off the penultimate ball of the match to send the Knight Riders into the final

From needing 13 runs off the last 24 balls to requiring 6 runs from the last 2, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) found themselves in the middle of a puddle as they took on Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 Qualifier 2. What ended up being the third consecutive defeat of the season for DC, the Rishabh Pant-led franchise nearly pulled off a heist against KKR.

The final four overs of the match at Sharjah produced the level of excitement that arguably no cricket match in the tournament so far had managed to, sending fans through a roller-coaster of emotions. As Rahul Tripathi sent Kolkata into the final with a six off the penultimate ball of the match, KKR fans breathed a sigh of relief. But the contest also gave fans a golden opportunity to show their creative sides and flood the internet with memes.

The Indian Premier League remains the most popular T20 league in the world. Be it the presence of top international stars, the competition among franchises, or the breathtaking action the league produces, there's hardly any other competition in the world that comes close. The KKR vs DC Qualifier 2 was a classic example.

Chasing a target of 136 runs, the Knight Riders got off to a flyer as Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill put up a 96-run stand for the first wicket. After Iyer departed having scored 55 runs, Nitish Rana contributed 13 from 12 before being dismissed by Kagiso Rabada.

Rahul Tripathi came in next and remained unbeaten on 12 from 11 but none of the 5 batters who followed him managed to even score a single run. The likes of Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Shakib Al Hasan, Sunil Narine and Lockie Ferguson didn't even open their account.

From needing 13 runs to win the match from the final four overs, the epic batting collapse saw KKR needing 6 runs from the final two balls. From being hailed for making the run-chase look incredibly easy, KKR had quickly become a target of trolls for the epic choke they were producing before Tripathi rescued them.
