Oregon coronavirus update: COVID-19 cases in the Mid-Valley, statewide continue to fall


Oregon reported far fewer coronavirus cases in the week ending Sunday, adding 7,527 new cases. That's down 14.1% from the previous week's tally of 8,760 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Oregon ranked 26th among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows.
In the latest week, coronavirus cases in the United States decreased 0.3% from the week before, with 506,884 cases reported. With 1.27% of the country's population, Oregon had 1.48% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 16 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Oregon reported a "death data reconciliation," giving the state a single-day record number of deaths. Oregon said it would be adding about 550 backlogged deaths in the coming weeks. Week-to-week comparisons will be inaccurate.

Marion County reported 722 cases and three deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 782 cases and 11 deaths. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 37,559 cases and 458 deaths.
Polk County reported 188 cases and one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 220 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic, it has reported 7,561 cases and 82 deaths.
Across Oregon, cases fell in 30 counties, with the best declines in Lane County, with 600 cases from 778 a week earlier; in Washington County, with 640 cases from 794; and in Linn County, with 444 cases from 531.

Oregon ranked 18th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 68.3% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 66.5%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows.
In the week ending Friday, Oregon reported administering another 105,531 vaccine doses, including 17,007 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 76,016 vaccine doses, including 16,411 first doses. In all, Oregon reported it has administered 5,602,359 total doses.
Within Oregon, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Sherman County with 674 cases per 100,000 per week; Gilliam County with 471; and Crook County with 434. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.
Adding the most new cases overall were Multnomah County, with 947 cases; Marion County, with 722 cases; and Deschutes County, with 701. Weekly case counts rose in five counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Yamhill, Sherman and Wasco counties.

In Oregon, 88 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 123 people were reported dead.
A total of 365,053 people in Oregon have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 4,372 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States, 45,970,785 people have tested positive and 745,832 people have died.
