Chelsea look to build on their second win of the Premier League season as they travel to St. Mary's to take on Southampton in EPL action.

The Blues had collected one point from their previous two matches before topping Leicester City 2-1 in a hard-fought victory down a man. Raheem Sterling got off the mark with his new club, earning the Blues three points with his brace. Chelsea weathered the Leicester City storm as well, surviving 17 shots while conceding just once.

It's been a rocky start to the Premier League season for Thomas Tuchel's bunch as they continue to search for reinforcements down the stretch of the transfer market, but they continue to endeavor forward.

Southampton, meanwhile, were downed by Manchester United 1-0 over the weekend by a Bruno Fernandes goal. The story of the match for the Saints was missed chances, coming up empty despite putting 17 shots up on the Red Devils and collecting 1.45 expected goals. Che Adams missed a couple of healthy chances throughout the 90 minutes, failing to add to their four-point haul through the season's first four matches.

Across all competitions, Southampton have only beaten Chelsea once in their last 15 meetings, courtesy of a 2-0 victory at St. Mary's on Boxing Day in 2019. Their last meeting here ended in a brutal 6-0 drubbing, with Timo Werner and Mason Mount each bagging a brace.

Southampton played well overall against Manchester United despite the poor end result, and that could leave Ralph Hasenhuttl tempted to deploy an unchanged starting lineup.

Che Adams has been bright up front this year, first off the bench and then earning a place in the starting lineup, but his misses against Man United were costly. Hasenhuttl could always go back to Stuart Armstrong up front if he believes a change will keep things fresh on a quick turnaround.

With the short rest, Oriol Romeu could also be deployed in midfield to keep bodies fresh. A fixture in the Saints midfield for years, Romeu has seen just one appearance this young campaign so far, in the season-opener.

Chelsea get defender Kalidou Koulibaly back from suspension after his one-match ban for being sent off against Leeds United. However, he may not find a place in the side after the positive performance from Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah against Leicester City down a man.

Conor Gallagher will miss the game after he was sent off against the Foxes, picking up two yellow cards within a six-minute span. That leaves the Chelsea midfield again in flux, as Thomas Tuchel looks to find a partner for Jorginho in the middle. Mateo Kovacic could be an option, but may not yet be risked from the start as he returns from a knee injury. N'Golo Kante remains out after picking up a muscular injury against Tottenham. That leaves Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a potential starter.

In the Chelsea attack, Mason Mount has struggled to start the Premier League season, hauled off at halftime against Leicester City. That could see a way in for Christian Pulisic who could earn his first league start of the season on a quick turnaround.

In a late bit of news, Reece James will reportedly miss the match, leaving Cesar Azpilicueta as a possible replacement, which would force a formational change. That would see Billy Gilmour included in the midfield as Tuchel switches from a back-three to a traditional back-four.
