The family of a man found dead last night say this is "an extremely difficult" time for the whānau, who also lost their sister in 2004.
In a statement this morning, police said they found a body, believed to be that of Mike Asher, in an area of bush in Glen Eden, West Auckland.
The 73-year-old was the father of Iraena Asher who disappeared at Piha in 2004 and was never found.
On Facebook, Asher's daughters wrote this morning: "It is with a heavy heart to bring the very sad news about our dad. Michael Pikikotuku Asher has passed away."
They also wrote: "This is an extremely difficult, sad and devastating time for our whanau, your love, prayers and compassion are greatly appreciated."
He went missing on Christmas Day after last being seen at home on Glengarry Rd. He was later reported missing on 30 December.
His death will be referred to the Coroner.
In 2012, a Coroner ruled 25-year-old Iraena was swept out to sea and drowned.
Police were criticised at the time for not taking her emergency call for help seriously, and sending her a taxi instead of a patrol car.
