Iodine Linked With Men’s Testosterone Levels

A recent study found that lower iodine concentrations in the urine were linked to higher testosterone levels in men. This surprising discovery suggests that excess iodine, traditionally considered harmless and beneficial, may actually be potentially harmful to men’s health. The study also revealed that excess iodine could be associated with extra-thyroid disorders, including androgen deficiency.

Men with lower urinary iodine concentrations had significantly higher total testosterone levels than men with either normal or high iodine levels. Excess iodine could affect testicular steroidogenesis directly, leading to lower testosterone levels in men.

Preclinical animal models have shown that rats fed a high-iodine diet experienced iodine accumulation in the testis, triggering oxidative stress and inhibiting testosterone activity. This sheds light on the potential harmful effects of excess iodine on men’s health.
