Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing Today: From launch in July to finally attempting landing on Moon, India's third lunar mission has covered a long way. ISRO's Vikram Lander Module will land around 6:04 pm on moon today. Later, it will release the Pragyan rover.

The real test of the mission will begin at the last leg of the landing. Prior to 20 minutes before landing, ISRO will initiate Automatic Landing Sequence (ALS). It will enable Vikram LM to take charge and use its on-board computers and logic to identify a favourable spot and make a soft-landing on the lunar surface.

Experts say that the final 15 to 20 minutes will be highly crucial for the success of the mission when Chandrayaan-3's Vikram lander will make its soft landing. Indians throughout the country and across the world are praying for Chandrayaan-3 Landing today.

Given the history of India's second lunar mission, which failed during the last 20 minutes before landing, ISRO is extra-cautious this time in the process. Due to high risk to the spacecraft minutes before moon landing, the duration is dubbed by many as "20 or 17 minutes of terror". During this phase, the whole process will become autonomous, where Vikram lander has to ignite its own engines at the right times and altitudes.

ISRO chairman S Somnath has emphasized that for Chandrayaan-3, they have kept a “failure-based approach" after learning the right lessons from Chandrayaan-2 which crash landed on lunar surface in 2019

During the last 15 minutes of the mission the speed of lander module will be reduced by nearly 6,000 km/hour to nearly zero. It was at this stage Chandrayaan-2 faced errors and crash laned on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-3 latest updates: ISRO's ambitious Chandrayaan-3 mission has been on a journey to the Moon since its launch on July 14. The expected touch down on the surface of the Moon's south pole is expected at around 6.04 pm today i.e. on 23 August. Chandrayaan-3 is aimed at the lunar south pole, a region with water ice, or frozen water, that could be a source of oxygen, fuel and water for future moon missions or a more permanent moon colony.

After its successful landing, Chandrayaan-3 is expected to remain functional for two weeks, running a series of experiments including a spectrometer analysis of the mineral composition of the lunar surface. Read More 

Following the gentle touchdown, the rover is poised to disembark from the underbelly of the lander and make its way onto the lunar terrain, utilizing one of its lateral panels. The lander might encounter the obstacle of lunar dust as a result of the ignition of its onboard engines in close proximity to the moon's surface.

Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing Today: As less than five hours are remaining for the landing of Vikram lander, students of Aligarh Muslim University offered prayer for the successful landing of Vikram LM.

Chandrayaan-3: In its latest update, ISRO will initiate the Automatic Landing Sequence after Vikram Lander reaches a designated point after 5:44 pm. During this phase, Vikram LM will activate the throttleable engines for powered descent.

In its latest tweet, the space agency said that it will initiate the Automatic Landing Sequence (ALS) once Vikram LM reaches at designated point.

“Awaiting the arrival of Lander Module (LM) at the designated point, around 17:44 Hrs. IST. Upon receiving the ALS command, the LM activates the throttleable engines for powered descent. Chandrayaan-3 Landing Today: Despite years of preparations and calculations, harsh conditions on moon's surface still poses a major challenge against the soft-landing of Vikram. Chandryaan-3 LIVE Updates: Ahead of the moon landing of Vikram and Pragyaan modules, know about the special connection between the ISRO spacecraft and Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil connection of the Chandrayaan missions refers to the three scientists from Tamil Nadu who helmed each of the crucial Moon missions of India's space programme.

Chandrayaan-3 Moon Landing: ISRO Chief S Somnath said that four years is not a short period. He also said that people have utilised every bit of it in “bettering our mission, to map all contingencies and prepare backup plans. In fact, we have prepared backups of our backup plans as well."

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE updates: In an exclusive interview with Hindustan Times, ISRO Chief S Somnath expressed his confidence that it is going to be a successful mission. 

“I want to clarify that this confidence is coming from the work that our teams have put in to ensure the success of the mission over the last four years, after Chandrayaan-2 make a hard landing in 2019. So, this is not overconfidence," he told HT.

Chandrayaan-3 LIVE Updates: Former ISRO scientist, YS Rajan, said that 80 per cent of changes have been made to ensure safe landing of Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft on moon.

“About 80 per cent changes are done (in Chandrayaan-3)...They incorporated many things into Chandrayaan-3," he said.
